Another game fixed for today at Bourda
By Sean Devers
Guyana begin their Regional Super 50 campaign at the Guyana national Stadium on October 19 when they face the Windward Islands in one of two first round matches on that day and Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Cricket Development Officer Reon King described yesterday’s washed out practice match at Bourda as a major set-back.
also. So to not be able to get in the middle is disappointing in several regards,” King said.
Chanderpaul, who has played 133 Test and scored more Test runs than every West Indian except Brian Lara, arrived in Guyana at around 04:00hrs yesterday from the USA and while he missed yesterday’s sessions he is keen to play today after last batting in a competition game in the El Dorado final at Albion last month.
Ramnaresh Sarwan, the other senior West Indies batsmen involved in the Guyana team’s preparation, continue to do his rehabilitation work prescribed by the WICB and its trainer as he recovers from a back injury which resulted in him being replaced in the West Indies ODI team to Bangladesh by Nevis opener Keiron Powell.
Sarwan, who had a poor Test series against India after being the leading West Indian batsman in the ODI series which preceded it, will not be involved in today’s practice match as he can only participate in light training before October 14 when he is expected to be back to match fitness.
Although Sarwan, who scored a record 462 runs with three centuries (another Regional 50-over record) in 2005 when Guyana won the last of their eight titles at this level, has been selected in the Guyana 14-man squad, Assad Fudadin has been named Skipper with Leon Johnson his deputy and Test batsman Travis Dowlin is on standby to replace Sarwan if he fails a fitness test on October 14.
The team includes six players who have never played Regional 50-overs cricket in Jonathon Foo, Trevon Griffith, Amir Khan, Ronsford Beaton, Steven Latcha and Paul Wintz, while Latcha, a 21 year-old off-spinner from
Berbice, is the only player in the squad without any experience for Guyana at the senior level.
Rain for most of yesterday left the outskirts of Bourda slightly soggy but the pitch, which was covered, should not be a major problem and once there was no heavy rain last night or this morning cricket should be played today at one of the four venues being used for this year’s eight-team Regional Super 50 competition.
