Under the theme ‘Confidential and Reliable: Get Tested Now’, the National AIDS Programme Secretariat (NAPS)’s National Week of Testing began Monday with some one thousand persons being tested in Region Four on the first day.
The activity is expected to pick up pace countrywide as the week progresses. This is according to Programme Manager of NAPS, Dr. Shanti Singh, who in an interview with this publication noted that there are some 75 sites in Region Four while there are mobile units moving around a number of communities along the East Coast and East Bank of Demerara.
In addition, there are sites at various locations on the West Coast of Demerara as well as on the Essequibo Coast all the way up to the Pomeroon. Dr. Singh explained that in Region Two, the initiative is being jointly executed by the Hope For All Foundation in collaboration with the Private Sector.
At the usual temporary centres which have been setup in Regions One, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten and parts of Region Two – where Tuberculosis and Malaria are prevalent – testing for these two diseases is also being offered.
Dr. Singh explained that in Region Six the activities are being carried out through the Berbice Regional Health Authority, which has set up sites as well as mobile units.
Dr. Singh pointed out that while testing began on Monday for most locations, over in Region One it commenced yesterday at Port Kaituma, Mabaruma and Matthews Ridge. Testing is also being done in Region Nine via the Remote Area Medical team.
Meanwhile the exercise will continue at sites around the country until Friday (October 7). Sites have been set up at the University of Guyana, Cyril Potter College of Education, the Government Technical Institute, Kaieteur News, as well as temporary sites at Demico House in Stabroek and Fogarty’s, Water Street. Persons are encouraged to visit these sties.
The National Week of Testing was officially launched back in 2007 and over the years has received complimentary response from the Guyanese populace and continues to improve. Last year, in excess of thirty-five thousand persons accessed testing throughout the ten administrative regions of Guyana at more than five hundred testing sites. In 2009 that figure stood at 27,365 and in 2008, 15,724.
