…promises young, experienced PPP slate
The Guyanese electorate will within a week know when they will go to the polls for Regional and General Elections.
This is according to President Bharrat Jagdeo who, yesterday, during a press briefing at Office of the President, said that he was in receipt of a missive from Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Dr Steve Surujbally informing him that the Official List of Electors (OLE) has been completed in accordance with the relevant laws.
“Now that I have received notification from the Chairman of the Elections Commission…I plan to within the week name the date of elections.”
The president asserted that the election will be held within the constitutionally prescribed period.
“Everything will be done in accordance with our constitution.”
The OLE contains the names of all registered voters and an elector’s name must appear on the OLE in order for him/her to vote
Jagdeo also reported that the list has been certified by the Commissioner of Registration/Chief Elections Officer, Gocool Boodoo.
The Head of State signalled that he was already in receipt of a copy of the list in a digital format on a disk in the form of a PDF File.
A legislative election must be held in Guyana before the constitutional deadline of December 28 and GECOM has already announced that they will be ready to undertake the Election by November 14.
More than a dozen parties are expected to contest the upcoming election, but the major players emerging thus far are the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C), A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance For Change (AFC), all of whom currently have seats in the House of Assembly.
As regards the People’s Progressive Party’s team that will contest the imminent election, Jagdeo said that it will be “exciting”, with people that are experienced in Government as well as young individuals.
The president stressed that the PPP is in a position where it has in its cadre a number of young, yet experienced persons in their 30s and 40s. This, he said, is true for more than half of his Cabinet members who are relatively young professionals but still have years of experience managing government.
“They have been there,” he said, adding that they have been tried and tested in very serious conditions. He maintained that the PPP team offers the greatest chance of continuity.
Jagdeo said that while in their approach they do speak about the past and its difficulties coupled with the abuses of the system, a lot of their campaign focuses on the future of Guyana.
