– donates ‘Champion’ jerseys as well
By Rawle Welch
Evidently satisfied with the results the team has been achieving over the past five years, Edward B Beharry, a local company that has consistently thrown its weight into the support for sports, did so once again after pledging significant sponsorship to the national Sevens rugby squad that is currently preparing to participate at the Pan Am Games in Mexico and NACRA Championships in Barbados respectively.
Yesterday, during a simple ceremony that was conducted in the Company’s spacious Boardroom, Marketing Manager Anjuli Beharry handed over a cheque worth $1million and a quantity of ‘Champion’ jerseys to President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) Christopher ‘Kit’ Nascimento in the presence of members of the squad, Assistant Coach Theodore Henry, Chairman of Selectors Mike McCormack and Assistant Marketing Manager Satesh Singh.
Speaking at the occasion, Beharry in her brief remarks acknowledged the success of the team over the past five years, pointing out that it was due largely to the team’s repeated outstanding performances, especially within the NACRA Circuit that has guaranteed the Company’s unremitting support.
She said that Edward B Beharry was extremely proud to be associated with the regional champions and urged them to continue to perform outstandingly, while promising maintain their assistance towards the team.
Nascimento in his comments first thanked the Company for sticking with the Union which according to him is the third time they’ve done so and called on them to stretch their support to the female team as well.
He stated that without corporate support, especially those that are derived from major entities it would be almost impossible for the
Union to do the things necessary to take the team to the highest level.
The GRFU President while admitting that Guyana faces an uphill task to win the tournament outright, firmly believes that the team could make it to the quarter-finals and beyond due to the fitness level and the quality of the side.
“It is difficult for us to beat teams such as Argentina, USA and Canada, but we will definitely be competitive because we are going to the Games with the best possible team,” Nascimento disclosed.
Guyana have been boosted by the inclusion of several of their overseas-based players including Kevin McKenzie, who is arguably one of the best players to emanate from the region, while experienced players such as Richard Staglon, Claudius Butts, Ronald Mayers, Dominic Lespierre and Rupert Giles complete the foreign list.
Nascimento added that the total cost to send the teams to the two assignments cost in the vicinity of US$20,000, adding that that is the kind of money needed to be spent to get teams to play at the world class level.
Once again Canada-based Spencer Robinson, who is no stranger to the team, will be the Head Coach, while Henry will serve as his Assistant / Manager.
The team is expected to leave on October 17 and will have at minimum 10 days to acclimatise and get adjusted, before the start of competition on October 29.
It is anticipated that Robinson will join the team during that period.
The other teams in the competition are Argentina, Mexico, Canada, USA, Chile, Brazil and Uruguay.
Argentine is seeded #1, while Guyana is positioned at #6 and plays its opening game against Uruguay.
McCormack spoke of the team’s preparations which he rates second to none locally in terms of fitness and extended congratulations to the members of the squad who’ve so far made a concerted effort to improve in that department.
