A nine-year-old South Ruimveldt Park Primary School pupil had two fingers crushed on Friday September 30, 2011 after a door was closed on his hand.
According to Trisha Class, mother of Izack Simpson, the injured student, the children were left unsupervised by the teacher, and were playing around in his absence. The horse play involved pushing children out of the class and locking the door.
When her son was pushed out of the class the other students did not realize that his fingers were in the crease of the opening and continued the routine. The pressure of the closed door not only crushed two of his fingers, but led to the removal of two of his finger nails.
“Teachers are responsible for people’s children during the school day. They should be more devoted to the children” as proclaimed by Ms. Class.
According to the injured child, he was escorted to the headmistress by a teacher. He said that the headmistress put cotton on his fingers and sent him to Festival City Clinic with a security guard.
The mother states that the clinic was closed and the security guard took her son to a neighbour because she was not home. Ms. Class’s neighbour called her to inform her of her son’s injury. The mother said that she picked him up from the neighbour and rushed him to Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to Ms. Class the doctor stated that the child’s two fingers were badly crushed. After removing the two finger nails that were barely attached to the boy’s fingers the doctor said that one nail would not grow back, Ms. Class stated.
She stressed the importance of teachers paying keen attention to their students and not leaving them unsupervised for long periods of time.
“It is ok if a teacher leaves the class they are allowed to, but at least have someone keeping an eye on the children so disastrous situations such as this won’t reoccur.”
