Despite the fact that it was a Third Division Competition, Guyana’s most dominant volleyball club Young Achievers of West Demerara junior side captured the Cellsmart-sponsored event when they defeated Lusignan in the final 30-27 yesterday at the National Park.
Playing in a round robin format where the top four teams with the most wins from the preliminary phase advanced to the semi-finals, Young Achievers produced a skilful performance to add another trophy to their burgeoning collection.
President of the DVA Dwayne Scott (centre) presents Young Achievers Captain Pooran Etwaroo with the winning trophy in the presence of all the participants yesterday.
The other teams apart from the two finalists that made it to the last four included Guyana School of Agriculture and Goed Fortuin.
Also part of the competition was representatives from the University of Guyana and the female Under-19 team that is currently preparing to participate in the Inter-Guianas Games.
According to President of the Demerara Volleyball Association Dwayne Scott, whose entity organised the event, the IGG squad was permitted to participate in the tournament to get valuable preparation as Guyana seek to win the title among the three countries which also include Suriname and French Guiana.
Scott, who took over the reins of the DVA earlier this year, told this newspaper that the tournament was just the beginning of a host of tournaments that they plan to execute, before the end of the year.
He stated that he was very impressed with the large turnout, adding that he felt it was phenomenal and augurs well for the future of the sport.
The DVA Head in his assessment of the final said it was a battle of tactics versus skill as both teams exhibited those qualities respectively which allowed the fans and fellow players to watch a fitting final.
Meanwhile, President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation Lenox Shuffler, who was part of the day’s activity related how happy he was to see so many teams participate in the one-day event and disclosed that plans are already in the pipeline to host a Beach Competition very shortly.
He said the details for such a competition will be released soon after the Organisers have finalised their plans.
The IGG contingent was presented with a monetary award for participating in the competition on behalf of the DVA, while all the participants received a cup compliments of Redjet.
