Patients are already being moved into the newly built In-Patient facility at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
This disclosure was made by Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy yesterday during a brief telephone interview with Kaieteur News.
Works on the building commenced in 2010 with a budgetary allocation of $716M for the first phase, while earlier this year an additional $235M was budgeted for its completion.
Minister Ramsammy explained that work on the building is completed and it is already occupied.
This spanking new facility, which is located on Lamaha Street, between East and Thomas Streets, will accommodate approximately 300 inpatients.
He said that the facility will have 214 beds for patients. The Female and Male, among other Wards would be housed in the building.
Ramsammy explained that the new facility will have all the new fittings as any other modern hospital.
He also stated that patients would be in a more comfortable environment, which is conducive for their treatment and recovery.
Chief Executive Officer at the GPHC, Michael Khan, had stated that the official ribbon-cutting ceremony and opening of the building will be announced during this month.
Khan had explained that each bed in the new facility will be equipped with modern centralised monitoring devices such as gas masks and heart and blood pressure monitors.
In addition, some 65 doctors and 60 nurses have already been identified to staff the new wing.
This new facility is expected to significantly ease the situation of overcrowding at the current location.
Recently, there have been instances of patients having to share beds in congested surroundings.
Meanwhile, Khan pointed out that a section of the hospital, which is currently housing male patients, will be dismantled.
The construction of the inpatient facility was undertaken by R. Bassoo and Sons Construction Company.
