– underage drinking was rampant
Huge piles of garbage and thick layers of broken bottles on Sunday morning were remnants that remained of the partying and revelry of the New Amsterdam Town Night ‘Washdown’ on Saturday evening.
The town was of an unbearable stench of what seemed to be stale beer. Clumps of garbage were evident throughout Main Street, especially from Pitt Street to Pope Streets. Some stallholders were still selling clothing and other accessories amidst the town’s unclean state. And then there were the broken bottles.
As if to demonstrate some message, beer and alcohol drinkers smashed their bottles on the road after they were finished with them. It seemed as if a hurricane had passed through the area.
Many criticisms have been voiced about the New Amsterdam Town Day.
Some persons said that the annual event does not serve a purpose and that it is only an alcohol- promoting event.
Many persons opined that the music at this year’s Town Night events on Saturday created unbearable noise, since there were several stereo systems placed very closely to each other, each struggling for some supremacy over the other.
Kaieteur News observed many young boys and girls openly drinking alcoholic beverages. Many young females, who appeared to be of school age, were hardly dressed but were seen along the Main Street with beer bottles in their hands and engaging in lewd dances.
One prominent New Amsterdam resident said that the Town Night event is no longer family-friendly, since it promotes sexual promiscuity.
Another citizen of the town said that neither the Mayor nor his Councillors would ever allow their children to be a part of such activities.
The Town Day which was held under the theme ‘Sustaining a Healthy Community with Citizens’ participation’, was far from what the theme suggested, with many persons questioning whether Saturday evening’s events were healthy community activities.
