Family and close friends were yesterday joined by Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Priya Manickchand, to celebrate the 105th birthday of Plaisance’s eldest resident, Doris Glasgow Morrison.
As the sun cooled yesterday ‘Aunty Doris’ was honoured with a simple thanksgiving ceremony, during which many of her all time favourite hymns were sang.
Also many took the opportunity to express best wishes to ‘Aunty Doris’ as she is commonly known around her village. While at her age her hearing is not as it was several years ago, she gave few occasional nods.
Doris Morrison was born in Buxton on October 1, 1906. She has one surviving daughter, nine grand children, 26 great grand children and three great-great grand children. She currently lives with one of her granddaughters, Ms. Maxine Straker, who has been taking care of her for several years.
According to Straker, ‘Aunty Doris’ only complains of arthritis in her knees and spends most of her time in bed as she is unable to walk.
An average day for ‘Aunty Doris’ is spent eating and sleeping. From time to time she sings some of her favourite hymns.
According to her granddaughter, as far as her knowledge serves ‘Aunty Doris’ may be the only person in their family to have lived to that age. Straker said that ‘Aunty Doris’ mother died at the age of 92.
She noted that ‘Aunty Doris’ spent most of her life being a housewife after completing her schooling. Although she had only two children one of whom died on her 100th birthday she is a mother to many.
