Dear Sports Editor,
The comment solicited from Carlton Beckles Secretary, Bartica Football Association, by Sports Journalist Marlon Munroe, in an article captioned “Time to end backwardness and one man show – Lumumba (S.N. 24.09.11).” Editor is a clear indication of how low moral values, insularity, nepotism and cronyism have sunk in the administration of local football.
According to Beckles, “Klass was only banned because he was a close ally of once Caribbean football strongman Austin ‘Jack’ Warner. While he expected a penalty from FIFA, it was a harsh one. Nothing was wrong with showing support for someone but has a problem when Guyana is continually being dragged in the ground for accepting money from Mohammed Bin Hammam, who reportedly handed out envelopes with US$40,000 to CFU delegates at the May meeting.” Sir, least of all I am not surprised by Beckles’ comment (s). Since apart from benefitting of a few overseas trips compliments of Klass, the individual was more interested in having an Extraordinary Congress convened to deal with the Presidency (ag) GFF, in defiance of the GFF Constitution, which clearly states the most senior of the Vice Presidents.
For public information and guidance, seniority within this context is reflective of experience which places Franklin Wilson ahead of Carlos Powell, despite the latter being the 1st Vice President, and the former the 2nd. With a similar situation occurring in CONCACAF, when Mr. Lisle Austin prior to his 1 year suspension was functioning as President (ag) of the Confederation.
As a consequence it boggles the mind, as to how Beckles was given the nod to represent the nation’s interest internationally, in an international administrator’s course and isn’t au-fait with the constitutional requirements! Meanwhile would have Beckles demonstrated the guts to request an Extraordinary Congress and demand from Klass his involvement in the cash for votes scandal, prior to his provisional suspension?
Further, was Klass and Beckles involved in any discussion or deliberation during the course of his provisional suspension, or as a matter of fact any other of Klass’ cronies? If, so, then the administration of football at that juncture was being brought into disrepute! This should entail an investigation and the relevant sanctions imposed. At the end of Klass’ hearing and the pronouncement of his ban, was mild. But nevertheless it was not conducted by the Guyana Police Force, Crime Chief! Since the investigative arm of the Ethics committee are all men of eminence headed by a former FBI Director, who found incriminating evidence, indicating Klass had compromised the Standing Orders of Accountability.
It’s with great pity if not a colossal shame, that Beckles is / was cast in the same mould of “Polyphemus” the one eyed giant, who saw everything for himself and nothing for no one else (from the tales of Greek Heroes). Wasn’t it harsh that Beckles was carried as baggage in the past as a FIFA referee, despite not passing the Coopers fitness test on 2 occasions! Wasn’t it harsh on players from Sunburst Camptown who were summoned to a Disciplinary Hearing, and dealt with accordingly, while another from a different club escaped in full view of Mr. Klass? Wasn’t it harsh to FIFA that the Goal Project under Klass’ stewardship failed miserably and ended up ‘Goalless”, despite a relative being contracted?
Wasn’t it harsh on a legitimate club to be denied participation in the National League, while an illegitimate Liquid Gold from Bartica was allowed to participate? Should I go on and allow the ‘litany of woes’ to continue unabatedly. Isn’t it harsh to football that Beckles spends more time annually in Lethem, rather than in Bartica, where he was elected to develop the sport?
In the final analysis, “The foolishness of fools is their folly”, take a bow Beckles and do the honorable thing, withdraw from football for 26 months!
Lester Sealey.
