Trevon Nedd learned of his fate yesterday when he was brought before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine Beharry, after it was alleged that he robbed Natasha Samuels of one gold chain valuing the sum of $45,000.The court was told that on September 25 at Water Street Nedd robbed Samuels of her jewellery, but it was not before the man used personal force on the woman.
Samuels, Prosecutor Sergeant Lionel Harvey told the court, was shopping on Water Street when she felt someone push her from behind. She turned around to see who had dealt her the shove, and on doing so noticed the defendant standing behind her. The man then dealt her another push to the face and proceeded to rob the woman of her gold jewelry. He held on to the woman’s chain, Harvey said, until it had disconnected from her neck. Samuels immediately after, raised an alarm. That is when public spirited persons came to the woman’s assistance the prosecutor informed. Persons took off in pursuit of the assailant. He was subsequently caught by the citizens, the chain was recovered and the police were summoned. The man was there after taken to the police station where he was charged and detained for the offence.
When brought to the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to face the allegations held against him, the man told the court that he was guilty. Nedd also related to the court that on the day in question he was desperate to get money. I have one child who is five years, and I live at home with my child’s mother the man said. I did not know how else to obtain the money. The confessed man told the court that he was not finding work after it was inquired by the Magistrate who later stated “you say you did not know how else to obtain the money have you ever tried working”
The 20 year old man told the congregation that he had no previous offences, asked the court to be merciful on him. The Magistrate then gave an evaluation of the man mentioning that he saved the court time and the articles were recovered.
Magistrate Beharry gave the convicted felon 12 months imprisonment for the offence subsequently stating that the offence was serious and a slap on the wrist should not be expected. The law woman further stated to the man that he is an adult and knows the consequences of his actions.
