Local authorities, including the Guyana Revenue Authority (Customs Department) and the Customs Anti Narcotics Units are said to be working closely with St Lucia officials in the wake of the recent cocaine bust in St. Lucia
A CANU official said that there is no likelihood of any arrests locally ‘right now’. And the GRA has also launched an investigation.
On Saturday, last six Guyanese were detained in St. Lucia following the discovery of 36 kilos of cocaine and 46 kilos of cannabis on a vessel, six nautical miles off Soufriere.
Reports state that one of the suspects detained on gun-related charges connected to the investigation is Guyanese David ‘Shakes’ Christopher, who is the President of the St. Lucian Amateur Boxing Association. Christopher’s wife, Mary Clovis Christopher, has also been detained.
Reports out of St. Lucia state that some of the suspects were nabbed on a vessel ‘Vicky B’, a Guyanese vessel.
According to the reports, the cocaine, cannabis, one 12-gauge shotgun, fifteen rounds of 12-gauge ammunition, thirty-five rounds of nine mm ammunition and five military explosive grenades were concealed in a compartment at the extreme front of the ship.
It stated that Acting Police Commissioner Vernon Francois said that his ranks are working with Guyanese officials on the current investigation.
Francois is also quoted as saying that this investigation also led police to the Bois D’Orange home of David Christopher on Tuesday, where an unlicensed firearm and ammunition were found.
Christopher and his wife have since been charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition.
Francois said that the Police investigation is continuing, which could mean more arrests or detentions.
