After months of being inaccessible to certain types of vehicles, including large buses, the Linden to Lethem Road was recently reopened to all categories of traffic, says Naeem Mohammed, Engineer, Public Works Ministry.
In early May, the Ministry handed over three contracts totaling $193M to contractors for the execution of rehabilitation and maintenance works on 265 miles of the Linden to Lethem roadway.
Before, the contractors could have commenced works, heavy rainfall in the hinterland.
The rain has eased and according to Mohammed, the ongoing repair works that are being executed by the contractors, BK International and Mekdeci Machinery Company (MMC), on the stretch have allowed the flow of traffic to at least 60 kilometer per hour.
He emphasised that deteriorations in the road including the Hunt Oil sections which were caused primarily because of the heavy rainfall during the months of June and July 2011, were repaired.
Mohammed stated that the repair works on the road are divided into four lots with BK International responsible for the Kurupukari to Lethem section (lot three) and MMC is responsible for the remaining sections.
It was revealed that works from Kurupukari to Lethem are 40 percent completed and are expected to conclude within the next two months. The scope of the works in that area includes grading and scraping sections of the road, rehabilitating critical sections of the roadway, and then overlay the surface with laterite.
Meanwhile, MMC completed 80 percent of repairs under lots one and four which is from Linden to Mile 72. Mohammed stated that the contractor still has to place additional material on roadway on certain sections.
He added that lot two commenced from Siparuni Junction to Kurupukari and covers a distance of about 60 miles. Thus far, the contractor has rehabilitated 15 miles. However, this section is experiencing heavy torrential rainfall resulting in the delay of works.
Mohammed asserted that works will conclude within the next three months and contractors will be conducting maintenance works on the stretch for a period of one year.
He emphasised that rehabilitation of 30 bridges along the road were completed and the Ministry is expected to carry out works on the remaining two soon.
