A family member of the nine-year-old from Number 46 Village, Corentyne, East Bank Berbice, who was raped by a 27-year-old man last January, is advocating that the perpetrator should be punished.
Reports are that the culprit is well-known to the little girl since the girl’s father is currently in a relationship with the perpetrator’s sister.
According to the girl’s grandmother, the perpetrator, with whom the minor lived for a few months was ‘sexually abusing’ her granddaughter on a regular basis.
The depressed grandmother stated that her daughter and her husband are now separated but at the time of the incident they were living together although she (the mother of the victim) encountered several forms of abuse on a daily basis.
The grandmother said that the culprit was molesting the girl but no one paid heed.
According to the victim, her dad was having an affair with the neighbour’s daughter and she (the minor) would spend time by her father’s lover.
She said that it was then that the lover’s brother made numerous attempts to push his hands “in my underwear” in the presence of his mother but she said nothing.
The minor later stated that she complained to her mother, who then spoke to her husband about the incident but the father contended that the little girl was lying.
The victim said that her attacker had sex with her almost every “other day”. She further noted that she complained to the attacker’s mother but her response was “you playing big woman.”
The confused girl with no one to talk with endured all the pain inflicted upon her. She also noted after the guy finished having sex with her she couldn’t walk nor bend since she was always in pain.
The mother of the victim, after facing physical abuses on a daily basis was taken out of the home by the police from #51, EBB, and was sent to her mother’s.
After the child’s mother left, she was left at the neighbour’s home by the father.
It is understood that while the minor was living with the neighbour, she was put to sleep with her attacker on a mattress in the living room while her dad slept with his lover in one room while the lover’s mother slept in another.
The victim’s grandmother said that the Help and Shelter had issued her with a letter to go to the school and collect the child but before the grandmother reached the school, the 27-year-old had already taken the child away and had hidden her by a neighbour.
When the grandmother finally had access to the minor, it was noticeable that the child was in pain. “Her belly was hurting, she couldn’t bend and she was moody,” said the grandmother.
It was then when the child was questioned. The victim also revealed the incident to the police when she was asked to take a medical.
The accused was then arrested but the victim’s father told the police that his daughter was “lying”. At that time he too was taken into custody but was released after each was placed on $20,000 bail.
The grandmother stated that her “animal like” son-in-law is now fighting for custody of her granddaughter. (Romila Boodram)
