There appears to be no medical records for a mentally challenged woman who allegedly stabbed a Clonbrook, East Coast Demerara man, to death last Saturday.
The woman, who gave her name as Adela Brown, underwent an evaluation yesterday by Dr. Bhiro Harry.
However the doctor could not determine her mental state to face a trial for murder and recommended further evaluation.
The woman has been in police custody since Sunday morning, hours after stabbing 39-year-old Sheriff Balmacoon to death.
There is no indication as to when or if she will be charged for the murder.
So far no relative for the woman has come forward.
A senior police official had explained that in the absence of a family member coming forward to swear to a committal order, the evaluating psychiatrist can commit the woman to the mental asylum, pending further evaluation.
This newspaper was informed that yesterday during her evaluation by the psychiatrist, the woman cried bitterly for periods at a time.
“The doctor never saw her before, nor was there any records of a person by the name that she gave the doctor,” a source told this newspaper.
Residents of the Clonbrook area where the murder occurred had informed this newspaper that the woman had been wandering in their neighbourhood for more than two months and would normally sleep under the shed of a shop in the village.
The source said that during her evaluation, the woman was responding well at times but would lapse out of lucidness for extended periods, giving the distinct impression that she is indeed mentally challenged.
“Sometimes she was just going off, talking gibberish,” the source told this newspaper.
Detectives are still no closer to ascertaining what prompted the attack, although there is speculation that Balmacoon, called ‘Boutam’ who is known to the woman, might have triggered it by engaging the woman who villagers said was a frequent sight in the Clonbrook Village.
An eyewitness said that she had peered out from her window just in time to see the woman chop Balmacoon on his neck.
“I hear de brick pelting and I look out fuh see is wha, and I see she fire a chop and Boutam fall down. Me call me son, ‘Look dah gal chop ‘Boutam’,” the eyewitness told this newspaper.
Another neighbour said that minutes after the attack, he tried to apprehend the woman but backed off when she displayed a violent temper.
“Me had to keep a distance from she. She had something in de bag. Me ask she why she juk de man and she seh leh me nah come close, she gon juk me too. So me back off and me nah had nobody fuh help me,” the neighbour related.
