City Engineer’s Department to be investigated — Councilor Chase Green

The City Engineer’s Department is to be investigated soon by an independent entity. The Mayor and City Council is unsure which entity it will engage to conduct the investigations or when it will commence, but it is determined to have the department investigated thoroughly.
According to a Councilor, Patricia Chase-Green, a motion was moved on September 12, during the Council’s statutory meeting to have the department investigated.
Green explained that some councilors neither have trust nor confidence in the City Engineer’s Department.
She explained that owing to the non-submission of plans and relevant documents to the Council by the department on the erection of certain structures on some plots and the construction of some buildings that are in contradiction to the building regulations around the City, the Council moved to file the motion.
Mrs Chase-Green emphasized that last year, the Council requested reports and plans for several buildings, and to date none were submitted.
For instance, the Council requested that the department supply a plan for a structure which was erected at Lot 50 Cummings Street, Alberttown. This was not done.
It is the opinion of the Council that the structure breached the building regulations. It is constructed too close to other structures; and has some shed which overlap on all sides.
Chase-Green noted that the department also dismantled and sold the materials of the old incinerator located at Princes Street. She stated that the department did not seek permission from the Council and again no report was supplied.
Another issue that is troubling some Councilors is the allocation of the land at Mandela Avenue.
Chase-Green stressed that initially, the land was used by an Auto Sales company for display but now permanent construction is ongoing on the plot. She noted that no plan was submitted to the Council regarding that erection.
She emphasised that there are several other constructions ongoing around the City and the Council is unaware of them because a plan has not been submitted.
