Roylee Charles, 26, of Mashabo Mission, an Amerindian Community on the Essequibo Coast, continues to elude the police while his younger brother, Sheldon Charles, remains a patient of the male ward at the Suddie Public Hospital Corporation.
The younger Charles sustained severe injuries to his stomach, the back of his head and to both of his arms after a beating on Monday.
Sheldon Charles said that he narrowly escaped death during the beatings he sustained at the hands of his elder brother, Roylee. His cousin, Keshan Charles, is also nursing similar injuries to his temple, chest and arm. Keshan has since received treatment at the Suddie Public Hospital.
The injured Sheldon recalled that he was in the company of his wife, when he was approached by his elder brother in the Mission Compound.
Sheldon said the incident occurred around 4:30 pm, Monday afternoon. According to the father of three, hours after his brother stabbed his cousin, Keshan, the man walked up to him and accused him of verbally assaulting his wife. “You cuss me wife.”
Sheldon said that he never had a problem with his older brother and further questioned him about his accusation.
After that encounter, Sheldon said that his brother left and returned with a huge piece of stick and started beating him. Sheldon, who works as a labourer in Mashabo, said that he fell to the ground.
He explained that after he fell his brother came back with a broken bottle in his hand and proceeded to hug him, while whispering in his ear, “I go done with you now”.
Sheldon said he immediately felt blood oozing from his stomach and his breathing felt unusual. “I felt like I was breathing through my stomach.”
Sheldon said that his brother then fled the scene, leaving him helpless.
Sheldon was taken to the hospital by the Captain and Medex of the Mission.
Roylee has told his father that he would surrender to the police, but he keeps eluding police ranks hunting him.
Sheldon said the incident occurred one day after members of the Community celebrated activities to commemorate Mashabo Heritage celebrations, in observance of Amerindian Heritage Month.
