– highlights their attentiveness
World renowned Hockey Coach Shiv Jagday, who is in the country to conduct sessions with current and potential coaches, continued his stint yesterday, at the GCC ground.
Jagday, who is a former national coach of both Canada and the USA, has been selected as the facilitator of the course which was made possible through the Guyana Olympic Association in collaboration with Olympic Solidarity and the Guyana Hockey Board.
Jagday, who hails from India and is a former national player, has coached players from the junior level right up to the Olympic and World Cup level with great success and is a respected member of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) coaching fraternity. Born in Punjab, India, Jagday grew up learning from the best in the game at the time, before moving to North America where he now coaches professionally.
The course which began on Monday runs until Saturday, October 1 with participants drawn mainly from the local clubs who coach the game at various levels.
Among the topics to be covered in the schedule are steps to develop young players, basic skills of the game, systems, offensive and defensive principles, press tactics and set plays. According to President of the GHB Philip Fernandes, Jagday has been to Guyana on three previous occasions and visited this country for the first time over 20 years ago. Fernandes attributed much of Guyana’s progress in hockey over the years to the influence of Jagday, who has taught all of Guyana’s successful coaches over the past 15 years at some time.
Among the areas taught yesterday included: 8 steps to develop a young hockey players; passing and receiving & triangle play; 2 on 1, 3 on 2 strategies & tactics and mini hockey 4 on 3, 5 on 5. Jagday expressed satisfaction with the progress of the coaches and noted their attentiveness, which is a key ingredient for their successful growth.
All the sessions were conducted both practically and theoretically.
Sessions continue today at the same venue and among the areas anticipated to be covered include Basic skills; Hit, sweep, push, and aerial hockey; Scoop; Tackling and types of Marking & Space awareness.
