GCA’s Carib Beer, Heroes Cup two-day cricket
Pugnacious former Guyana under-19 right-hander Andrew Gonsalves smashed 12 fours in 101 and left-arm spinner Javed Rasheed bagged the second five-wicket haul in the competition as they spearheaded hosts Everest to a crushing 10-wicket win against Transport Sport Club (TSC) last weekend in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Carib Beer, Heroes Cup two-day first division cricket competition.
Everest took an early lead in competition after GYO had taken first innings points over Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) in the other first round match played. Only one match was played last weekend due to the unavailability of grounds in the city.
On Sunday the DCC ground was used for softball cricket which was broadcast live on the State-owned NCN Radio even though not a ball of radio commentary was carried by Guyana’s only radio station in the more nationally important Guyana Cricket Board’s El Dorado 50-over final at Albion on Sunday.
Bourda, the venue for the first ever Test match win by the West Indies back in 1930, was also unavailable due to the Guyana Fashion Weekend fashion show on the ground even as GCA President Roger Harper, the former West Indies off-spinner, continues to lament the unavailability of cricket grounds in Georgetown for non-cricket activities.
TSC crashed to 117 all out despite 27 from Dwayne Graham and 20 from Keno Morris as Rasheed captured 4-31. Phillip Persaud (3-17) and Gonsalves (2-31) also bowled well for the Camp Road team.
Gonsalves and Adrian Singh, who smashed eight boundaries in 52, added 94 for the sixth wicket as Everest declared at 226-8.
Morris returned with the ball to take 3-43, while off-spinner Kevin Ross had 3-65 for TSC who fell for 115 in their second innings with Devon Nandan making 35, Carl Rambharose 32, and Graham 23.
Rasheed was again TSC’s main tormentor with 6-45 and figures of 10-76, while Christopher Surat 3-22 supported well for Everest who reached seven without loss in their second innings to formalize their 10-wicket victory. (Sean Devers)
