Dear Editor,
I have been forced to resign my position as the Driver/ mechanic at the Port Kaituma Hospital due to the atrocious running of the administration of Region One, particularly the personnel section.
From 1999, I had been attached to that institution and have worked under the supervision of nine different medex and have never had any problems with any of them or any staff member.
Medex Augustus who is now in the USA, Medex Khemraj, now based in Canal Number One, Medex Sadama, who is now deceased, Medex Houston, who has moved to GUYSUCO, Medex Johnson who has resigned, Medex Ross, resigned and now has his own clinic, also Medex Barnes, who is stationed at Mathews Ridge Hospital, Medex Willis, who is now stationed at Mabaruma Hospital and Medex H. Ed Geilo, presently at the Port Kaituma Hospital were all people with whom I worked. These are all wonderful and helpful persons, with the exception of Sadama who has passed on.
My main concern is that in the last two years I was on a contract/gratuity terms with the region and based at the hospital.
For the first contract for 2009-2010 everything was okay for that period. The second contract started on the 14-06-2010 and lasted to 13-06-2011 inclusive.
The second paragraph of this said contract stated that I will be paid a gratuity subject to satisfactory service at the rate of twenty-two and a half percent of your basic salary calculated on completion of three months. Resident service shall be paid at a six-month intervals.
And paragraph number three states that I am entitled to 14 days vacation leave to be taken prior to expiration of your contract, also a vacation allowance of one month’s basic salary, payable at the end of the contracted period.
Now that I have finished with the administration since the 13th July, it is supposed to be finish with me already. I have no right to be going the office anymore. It looks like one is begging. One could even be called a saboteur. That money should have been paid already.
There are two Amerindian maids at the hospital, Sandra and Beryl George. Both of them are on contracts/gratuity Agreement. And they too are being pushed around by the Administrative office when they ask about their contract money. Most times they are told that the paper is misplaced or lost and that they will have to reapply for their gratuity.
Beryl’s contract ended in May 2011 and up to now she has not received any money.
She has already started to work by renewing her contract. But she is frustrated as she is a single parent; she has bills to pay and children whom she has to facilitate with many school items.
