Sunday, September 25, in the sweltering heat on the hard-court of GTM, New Amsterdam, the youthful and energetic Port Mourant Jaguar Volleyball team played superbly to remain unbeaten and in the process carted off the first place trophy when the Berbice Volleyball Association held a one day round robin competition to coincide with the commencement of New Amsterdam Town Day Activities 2011.
The competition was originally billed as a “knock-out” competition but was changed to a “round-robin” format to facilitate more expose for a new set of young Volleyballers especially females preparing for the IGG to be held in Suriname next month. Six teams participated namely Rollers of New Amsterdam, Falcons of Canje, Port Mourant Jaguars, Guyana Training School (GTC/PM), Canje Secondary School Males and Canje Secondary School Females.
Port Mourant Jaguars defeated all on Sunday to cop the first place trophy, while GTC PM claimed second- losing only to PM Jaguars, Falcons placed third.
At the presentation ceremony held immediately after the conclusion of the final match. President of the Association Mr. Gregory Rambarran thanked the participants and officials for their exemplary conduct during the day and expressed gratitude to the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club for donating the 1st, 2nd and MVP Trophies and Food For The Poor for the donation of Volleyballs, T-Shirts and other materials.
Each team received two volleyballs while the officials for each team received Nike Boots, T-Shirts and Underwear.
The winner (Port Mourant Jaguars) received a trophy, GTC/PM the second place trophy and the MVP Trophy went to Julius Sewnarine of Port Mourant Jaguars.
Prizes for outstanding performances went to Quacy Matheson of GTC/PM, Satesh Seenauth of Port Mourant Jaguars, Trevis Jaggernauth of C.S.S and female players Cynthia Harris, Tamala Felix and Kathleen Victor. A special prize was also presented to Mr. Errol Chase, referee and coach of the female players.
The BVA’s next competition will be the Dilip Budhram Memorial Trophy Competition which is billed for Albion Community Centre Court on October 30.
