Businessman Arnold Gajraj, who was brutally beaten and robbed of $15,000 on July 19, 2009 by three policemen in the vicinity of his home on Greenwich Park, East Bank Essequibo, is calling on the Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee and the relevant authorities to investigate these policemen.
The businessman recounted that after he was locked up for three days and three nights at Parika Police station, he was further brutalised.
The frustrated businessman said that after the entire ordeal, he wrote “countless” letters to Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Ms Shalimar Hack’ and the Minister of Home affairs.
He said that he received partial replies stating that there would be an investigation, but to his knowledge nothing was done to date.
Mr. Gajraj, who is a sales representative in pharmaceutical supplies, said he is familiar with the three policemen whom assaulted him in 2009.
He explained that on the day in question, he was at home in his garden at Greenwich Park, East Bank Essequibo, when at approximately 14:15hrs three policemen whom he knew and who were from Leonora Police station called out to him.
The man further explained that at first he sent his son to enquire what the policemen needed. “They does normally come for condoms and other things.”
However, he said the policemen demanded that they wanted to meet with him.
He said that as he approached the police officers they questioned him about a robbery that happened in Ruby Backdam. Gajraj said that he told them that he was not aware of the robbery, and was surprised because he knew of a wash-bay in that area that is frequently used by the police.
Adding that the officers asked him to accompany them for further questioning and information because he is a well known man in that area, Gajraj said after he went back to the house to put on proper attire, since all of this took place in his shorts. He changed his mind and told the three policemen that he did not want to go with them since he had no information to give. He stated that “Corporal Williams kicked him, took $15,000 from him and threw him into the vehicle.”
He further related that he spent three days and three nights and was released with a “sorry it is not you, it was someone else” excuse and was never given back his $ 15,000 that was taken that day of his arrest.
He lamented that he has made complaints to Brickdam Police Station, the Ministry of Home Affairs, West Bank Regional Chairman, and Eve Leary Police Headquarters. However, according to Mr. Gajraj he received replies stating that the situation would be looked into, but when following up with the matter they stated they had not received any complaint from him.
Mr. Gajraj has made it clear to Kaieteur News that all he wants is justice for the harm that was done to him and his family, and the continuous mistreatment he receives from those same three policemen. “All I want is justice.”
