Ituni Warriors and Regal Masters XI turned in special performances to upstage Mahaica Princesses and Rangers Masters XI respectively and were duly crowned countrywide champions when the Female open 10/10 and the Over 35 category softball cricket tournament sponsored by Regal Stationery and Computer Centre concluded over the past weekend.
Activities got underway when Ituni Warriors won the toss and inserted the opposition, limiting them to 99-4 in their allotted ten overs. Simone Duke clobbered an entertaining 49 that included one six and 6 fours with support from Kamlawattie Persaud who struck 26 painstaking runs. Donnette Williams was the opposition’s best bowler taking 1-13 from 2 overs with support from Arisa Williams (1-17 from 2 overs).
Ituni Warriors then lost their first wicket with the score on 6 and one run later the opposition struck again to create some panic in the team. The third wicket pair pushed the score to 27 before Manisha Culpepper (26) and Alana John (24) combined in a 69 run partnership and steered their team to victory with 1 over to spare. Alana John, who lashed 24 runs and returned to perform credibly in the field, was voted the woman of the match and received $10,000 and a trophy, while Ituni Warriors collected $50,000 dollars and a beautiful trophy. Mahaica Princesses received $25,000 dollars and a trophy for their efforts.
In the male over 35 category Regal Masters XI won the toss and elected to bat, amassing 222-6 in their 20 overs after opening batsman, Mark Fung lashed a brilliant half century (52) with support from the prolific Samuel Kingston whose 45 runs was laced with four sixes and 3 fours in an opening partnership of 70 in 54 balls.
Kingston, eventually adjudged man of the tournament, was the first to go, bowled by Ramesh Rambharose trying to play across the line. Lance Adams entered and kept Fung’s company with a sterling half century (56) knock in a partnership worth 115 that kept the scoring rate at a commendable 10.5 when the innings expired.
The best bowler for the Rangers Masters XI was Aleem Khalil whose pace bowling netted 4-25 from 2 overs. He was supported by Ramesh Rambharose who contributed 1-23 from 4 overs.
Rangers Masters XI then lost their first wicket with the score on 1 and never recovered as there was a steady trek to the pavilion. Jagmohan Singh (17) was the only batsman to register double figures as the opposition’s top bowler, Mahendra Arjune, snared 5-18 from 4 overs with support from Mahendra Hardyal (2-19 from 4 overs).
Regal Masters XI carted off the top prize of $100,000 and a trophy with Samuel Kingston copping the man of the match prize and the $10,000 that went with it. The runner up team received $59,000 and a trophy for their losing effort.
President of the Guyana Softball League Mr. Halim Khan graced the presentation ceremony and congratulated the winners while expressing gratitude to the sponsor, Regal Stationery and Computer Center for their chivalry. He also commended the teams for splendid displays as well as the demonstration of discipline which characterized the tournament.
The president further noted that the tournament is the first ever over 35 country wide tournament held locally that involved 47 male teams. He further congratulated the females for their efforts which added spice to the tournament. Trinidadian, Brij Parasnath was instrumental in providing live radio commentary at the finals.
Managing Director of Regal Stationery, Mahendra Hardyal expressed heartfelt congratulations to the winners while noting the efficiency of the organizing committee. He subsequently committed to future sponsorship of the tournament.
