…police still to take action
A 50-year-old woman of Better Hope South, East Coast Demerara, was attacked and raped on April 19, last, on the Seawalls by her “regular” 27-year-old driver also of Better Hope. She claimed that the man was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Yesterday, the woman was still emotionally distressed. She stated that she knew the accused for three years and trusted him a lot; she even treated him as her son.
She stated that the perpetrator did most of her daily transportation “runnings” because he was fully aware of her movements and the fact that her husband was not around most of the time.
The victim also stressed that her life rotates around her home, her mother’s place and church. After church the accused would normally pick her up and carry her home.
According to the victim, it was some time before April 19, when she first noticed the perpetrator looking “at my legs”. The woman further said that her attacker even asked her “strange questions” concerning her personal life.
She said that she ignored his behaviour for two reasons; because she knew him for a while and he never behaved in such a disrespectful manner before;, and because he was under the influence of alcohol.
The perpetrator, who works for “One Love Taxi Service,” had numerous brushes with the law, and was always in ‘police matters’.
The woman said that some time last April the accused was in some “problems” that resulted in his car being parked in the Plaisance Police Station compound. She said that he needed $27,000 in order to “bail” his car out.
The accused borrowed the required amount from the victim.
According to the woman, after church on April 19, she received a call from the perpetrator stating that she should walk out and meet him at Vryheid’s Lust Road.
When she entered in the back seat of the car, she placed the money he had asked for next to him; he then collected the money and placed it in his glove compartment.
After driving off, the accused told the woman that he needed to collect something and would drop her home once he was finished. She said that while in the car she noticed he was driving towards a dead end at the seawalls.
He then stopped and jumped in next to her and started rubbing her “legs,” she said. She slapped him and he became furious and aggressive. He then pushed her against the door where she hit her head and became dizzy. It was then, she said, that he took advantage and raped her.
She recalled him saying, “If you get black out I’ll throw you over the sea wall,” it was then that the woman got scared and begged him to drop her home. She said that she was in a semi-conscious state.
She mentioned how embarrassed and scared she was and couldn’t talk to anyone. But her daughter eventually figured something was wrong, and she was forced to relate the incident to her.
The woman said that after the incident, several attempts were made by the driver and his stepfather to run her over.
The victim told his newspaper that after the incident her health started to deteriorate forcing her to seek medical attention. It was at the hospital that she was advised by the doctor to make a report.
A report was then made at the Plaisance Police Station, but no arrest was made since the accused disappeared.
After days of hiding the accused was eventually brought into custody but was released within an hour.
The victim is even more scared now that the perpetrator is on the loose and can at anytime make a move on her. She said that she has received “105 threatening calls.”
Yesterday, this newspaper made contact with the attacker and his response was, “That woman is mad, that matter is already dealt with and I ain’t speaking to you.’
The disappointed woman spoke about the pain the “abuse” has caused her since she is a pastor and always lived a “pure” life. She also stated that the mother of the accused cursed her in front of the entire neighbourhood causing her to remain in her home most of the time since rape was a “stigma”.
