Dear Editor,
I refer to a column by Ralph Seeram in yesterday’s (Sunday, Sep. 25) issue of KN, “titled, “Freddie is a jackass.” In fighting the dictatorship of Forbes Burnham and Bharrat Jagdeo in Guyana I have been called worst. I have never lost a sleepless night over such easily forgettable trivialities that come from being a public figure. I doubt I will over someone named Ralph Seeram.
Mr. Seeram published in that very column the contents of a private e-mail I received. Someone I don’t know e-mailed me to tell me about the qualities of Mr. Seeram with whom he said he shares a long friendship. I don’t know why anyone would want to tell me about Mr. Seeram because I am not interested. I don’t know Seeram, never met him, never e-mailed him. From what I read in his columns, he is a supporter of Mr. Jagdeo so I don’t care to know about him. I asked the person not to impose on my mail box by sending me again anything on Seeram. It was accompanied by my opinion of Seeram which I stand by and for which I am unapologetic.
I received another e-mail from the same person indicating that he was not the one that sent the original mail and he named the actual sender. I replied saying that I responded to the address I found in my mail box and again I asked not to be sent anything on Seeram. That is my right. Again, I penned my opinion on Seeram and again I asked not to receive anything about him. Mr. Seeram in his Sunday piece printed what was contained in my two private e-mails. I don’t know if he thought I would be scared about the publication. Everything I said in those mails, I stand by.
After his abusive language, Seeram informed me (in his Sunday column) that the Guyana Government is not the only corrupt administration in the world. He cited corruption in the US Government. What this has to do with my own struggle against financial nastiness in the country I live in, is impossible to fathom. For all you know, the US Government may be the worst offender in corrupt practices but I still can’t see what that has to do with our efforts here to stop insane corruption?
This logic by Seeram is extremely foolish. I can offer an example to prove how idiotic it is. A group of policemen mercilessly beats an accused in Guyana. We should not speak out against it because worst happens in other nations. A judicial offer takes a bribe in Guyana and we should not call for a resignation because worst happens in other nations. So if I find that Belgium or Italy or the US has more instances of police shooting people to death, I shouldn’t protest police killings in Guyana. This is the logic of Mr. Ralph Seeram.
Unfortunately, Mr. Seeram in the most unintelligent of ways is unable to see the difference between a super rich country like the US with a population of three hundred million, with Guyana, one of the poorest in the world, with a population of just under 800,000 and which has a yearly income that is vastly lower than dozens of individual American companies. The point is, corruption in the US Government may never ever impact on the average citizen but in dirt poor Guyana, its direct effect is felt by most of the population.
Mr. Seeram informs me that Sir Shridath Ramphal offered praise for Mr. Jagdeo and I didn’t lambaste him but I picked on him, Seeram. Maybe I have more respect for the intelligence and commonsense of Ramphal. If I receive a mansion from a cruel governor, I have reason to offer eulogies to the governor. It is only a fool that receives nothing from the governor yet praises him all the time.
Mr. Ramphal was a highly paid consultant of the Guyana Government in the concluded maritime dispute with Suriname. It was not the only time his services were sought by President Jagdeo. Mr. Ramphal’s name appeared recently in the press alongside Mr. Kads Khan of the PNC and the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ralph Ramkarran in a certain type of business investment in Guyana.
Where is Mr. Seeram’s investment and where is his consultancy? Mr. Seeram dares me to describe Sir Shridath in the same way I assessed him. Is Mr. Seeram comparing himself with Sir Shridath? I cannot do that and will not do that because as mentioned above, there is a logic to Mr. Ramphal’s action. Seeram has no logic and no rationality in his praise for Mr. Jagdeo. Here is an example, If Mr. Ramphal is offering tributes to the President, I think he is intelligent to know he must avoid mention of the elections in Guyana and I don’t think he will. Mr. Seeram tells us that the PPP will win the next election.
Mr. Seeram ends his column by urging his friends to continue to send me e-mails about him. I can only conclude that of all the people in the world that Seeram chooses to have his qualities explained to is me. But I am not interested. I don’t want Seeram’s friend using up my mail box space to tell me about Mr. Seeram because I don’t ever want to know anything about Mr. Seeram. I end by advising Mr. Seeram to look up some other Guyanese living in Guyana to impose himself on.
