Dear Editor,
In the immensely successful movie Titanic, a three-man band continued to belt out soothing music as the colossal ship was sinking to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean after hitting an iceberg. The band played on in the midst of complete chaos as panicked passengers scrambled to save their lives.
Guyana is like the Titanic and the PPP/C government is the owner and director of the band. After hitting an iceberg in 1999 when Bharrat Jagdeo became this country’s President, the ship has been rapidly sinking to the rhythm of numerous parties, public shows and most recently, the annual ‘summer break’ fête, which is really a series of raves that celebrate lawlessness and vulgarity with the blessings and sponsorship of the State.
The government has a policy of distraction and deception. Distract the masses with numerous festivals, making it impossible for them to pause and consider their dire living standards, and deceive them with organized propaganda that paints a picture of Guyana being a utopia. This combination, once delivered consistently and continuously, has the potential to create the illusion among youths in particular, that everything is bright and beautiful.
The elders and religious leaders in our society as well as the opposition political parties have failed miserably to provide alternative leadership for our youths. Instead, they have left them adrift at the mercy of the Titanic’s clueless Captain and crew.
However, there may actually be some light at the end of the tunnel. Finally, and for the first time in this country’s history, several major political parties have come together to create a government of the people, by the people and for the people; a government of real national unity. This group is Guyana’s last hope. We must not allow the opportunity to bring a halt to the rapid decline of our nation to slide by. It may only come once.
The band plays on.
