Dear Editor,
I am an Amerindian from the interior region of Guyana. I decided to take some time to visit the capital city to see what is taking place for my indigenous celebrations. I was pleased with some of the activities that took place.
Apart from that while I was watching President’s Appreciation Day celebration on television I was saddened to hear the remarks on health care services.
Ms. Yvonne Pearson, Chair Person for the National Toshao’s Council stated in her speech that “With this government there is better and improved health care services throughout the length and breadth of Guyana.” Who fooled her? I wholeheartedly disagree with her statement.
I was recently trained and given a post in the field of health care, and the system has not improved along with education in the interior. Maybe it is better in coastal areas; that I don’t know for certain.
I have visited other health posts in many remote villages as part of medical outreaches from my heath center, where I am based. Health posts are in a terrible condition. They have few to no supplies and no transportation to carry patients or medical personnel. There is an abundance of issues in these posts.
I believe the health sector is being ill-treated. We are not eager to work on it, and our people are punishing because no one listens to our cries. Most times we take money from our meager salaries to pay private transportation to send patients to nearby health centers. Who will refund us our money?
I wonder what is really happening to all these indigenous funds that can be used to improve matters such as this. Most of us in the Hinterland say “I wish I had a good set of money to pay for better medical care at private hospital.”
I think Ms. Pearson should tour the length and breadth of Guyana before she gives any praise. Maybe it was said to impress the world for the appreciation day. If this government is claiming that they are doing better, I urge them to actually do better! No in the interior knows what is being said on the media.
