The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association has sanctioned two of its coaches, Al Thomas and Gregory Cort for bringing the sport into disrepute.
This is in connection with the coaches reporting to the media that their boxers were not provided with breakfast on time on one morning during the recently concluded amateur championships at the National Gymnasium. The media were told that nothing to eat was provided and eventually they had to purchase their own meals for that morning, with the person responsible stating that there was a hiccup that caused the problem.
However, a GABA enquiry into the matter proved otherwise. It was discovered that the two coaches did not use the channels available to them to settle any dispute, they also pooled money and bought their own meals and were refunded by GABA promptly.
GABA Secretary Sean Richmond informed the pair via letter that they were being placed on a one year bond following the review of the incident and handling thereof by Disciplinary Committee.
The letter cited the, “…recent public interview with media representatives, in which negative statements detrimental to the Association were made without any reasonable efforts on your part, to address the areas of conflict with any of the responsible personnel on the executive body of the association.”
The Secretary stated that, “This action is a violation of the constitutional rules with respect to the Conduct of Officials of affiliated Gyms that has been viewed as a very serious attempt by you, to bring GABA’s administration of the sport into disrepute. As a consequence, the decision was taken to impose a bond for a period of one year with effect from the date of this letter, during which you would be expected to desist from practices which may have the uncomplimentary impacts to the sport or GABA, having regards to Section 25 of the Constitution of our Association which states that:
“Each Club or Organisation upon being affiliated with the Association shall be furnished with a copy of its Rules upon payment of sum fixed by the Association and shall be bound thereby. The Association shall have power to suspend or expel any affiliated Club or member of a Club not conforming to the Rules or if the Club be conducted or the member conducts himself in a manner detrimental to the credit or interest of boxing or of the Association, or attempt to obtain redress through any outside channel in any matter capable of being dealt under the Rules of the Association.”
When contacted, GABA President Steve Ninvalle stated that he has no problem with affiliates expressing views in the media, but in the
case of a problem affecting them, there are avenues to seek redress and those channels must be exhausted. He noted that the pair acted in bad taste and their action has brought the sport into disrepute. Ninvalle noted that his phone is always available to anyone and the two coaches have easily contacted him in the past for other matters and he could not understand why they couldn’t call him if there was a problem. He noted that he learnt of the problem when he was called by a reporter. While the delay was regrettable, GABA found the tale told to the media was not a true reflection of what transpired. This was supported by two other coaches at the venue, hence the investigation and sanction by the amateur boxing body.
Kaieteur even learnt from an official that the same coaches have not to date paid the registration fees for their boxers, an issue GABA has allowed to ride for the moment.
The organization is calling on all affiliates to ensure that the rules are followed in the future and this kind of behaviour does not recur as they seek the help of all concerned to lift the sport and achieve the goals set, first and foremost, improving the level of local fighters and securing medals at the 2012 Olympic Games.
