After producing two imposing performances, the clash between host Fruta Conquerors and Santos is anticipated to generate a riveting finale to the Milo Under-23 Football Tournament which concludes today, at the Tucville ground.
The two teams registered emphatic victories over their respective opponents in semi-final action that has created well deserved discussion among pundits and followers that makes today’s showdown a much talked about rivalry as the tournament climaxes.
On Friday, Santos sent an ominous warning to any pretender aimed at getting in their way to grabbing the ultimate prize with a convincing 5-0 win over Police, while Fruta Conquerors responded with a similar performance in their 4-1 demolition of Flamingo to set up an intriguing final.
Once again, Santos will look to the likes of the prolific Colin Harris, Trevon Lewis and Lerone Charles to orchestrate their victory plan, while Fruta Conquerors, who many feel has played way below expectations, will be relying on players such as Eon Alleyne, Jermain Junor, Pernell Schultz and Tavis Hackette to take them over the line.
In the feature game on Friday, both teams started out looking positive and created a fe opportunities o score, but once again clinical finishing was absent.
However, Fruta Conquerors spurred on by partisan support from a fair-sized crowd lifted their game and was rewarded when a cross from the speedy Mark Walton playing on the left flank found an alert Hackette, who burst through the middle inside the opposition defence, before delivering a firm side-footed attempt that eluded an advancing Isaiah Gordon stationed between the uprights.
Six minutes after, Hackette was once again in action this time taking advantage of a mix-up between the Flamingo defenders to pounce on a loose ball and finish with clinical precision. That made it 2-0.
The score-line remained unchanged at the half.
Five minutes after the resumption, Fruta
Conquerors wasted no time in stretching their advantage when Schultz, pounced on a long pass from the back, eluded two markers, before dribbling goalkeeper Gordon and hammering a shot into an empty net.
Flamingo though never relented and attacked with fervour and got their reward in the 69th minute through Devon Hyman, who lashed in from close range.
However, Fruta Conquerors was in no mood to accommodate any challenge and sealed the game beyond doubt when Marco Marcus netted their fourth goal in the 70th minute.
In the opening game, Santos reached the final through a hat-trick of goals from Colin Harris, who netted in the 15th, 33rd and 51st minutes, while Lerone Charles in the 21st and Trevon Lewis 69th supported admirably.
Police and Flamingo will do ballet for the third place and forth places.
Over $1million in prize monies are up for grabs with $100,000 set aside for the winning team, while the runner-up receives-$50,000, 3rd place-$30,000 and 4th place-$20,000.
Prizes will also be awarded to outstanding individual performers.
