One of Linden’s newest businesses, the EVER PURE water treatment facility located on Burnham drive, Wismar has decided to give back to the community in a tangible way. The gift is a facelift for the Christianburg waterwheel.
President of the Region Ten Tourism Association, Trudy Scott, yesterday told the media that she was very happy by the initiative taken by EVER PURE to give the waterwheel the facelift, and also to fence the historic landmark.
Scott said that the association had been looking out for such an initiative for a very long time, and was therefore very enthused when EVER PURE approached them with their proposal.
She added that it is the first time that a private entity has shown interest in the landmark in recent times, and actually plans to ensure the general maintenance of the area.
Wilfred Simmons, a member of the association also expressed his appreciation to EVER PURE.
He described the waterwheel as one of the oldest and most important landmarks in Linden, making it very important to the tourism sector in Region Ten.
Simmons noted that wooden fencing had previously been placed around the waterwheel, but it never ‘survived’, thus the time has come for a more permanent structure to be erected around the perimeters.
Cornelius Roberts, supervisor of EVER PURE pointed out that the company is happy to take on the project. The staff had noted the deterioration of the security rails and the general run down condition of the place.
According to Roberts, EVER PURE has already begun debushing of the area, and plans to erect new security rails, along with painting and general cleaning of the site “Monuments give us a visual perspective of the past, and preserving them should be a priority,” Roberts emphasized.
The waterwheel was established in 1855 at Christianburg, to power the sawmill that was set up in the area by Scotsman Dalgliesh Patterson.
It harnessed the fast flowing current from the Katabulli creek to power the sawmill, which was used to cut up logs before they were transported by river to Georgetown.
