The Guyana police department and Ministry of Home Affairs will continue working in conjunction with Crime Stoppers programme and Police Security Industry Partnership (POLSEC) to better ensure public safety and security within the country.
On September 14, last, the National Commission on Law and Order (NCLO) held a conference with representatives of the Private Sector Organizations to discuss the revival of the Crime Stoppers Programme and POLSEC. It is a shared notion that this union holds the key to keeping an eye on crime on a private and public level.
Both the Private Sector Commission and the Guyana Police force are responsible for the rise of POLSEC back in 2003. This involves sharing of crime and security information between Private Security Firms and the Guyana Police Force.
A dedicated phone line with the telephone number 592-225-0554 has been assigned to receive the information. No rewards are given to persons who share crime tips to the Guyana Police Force.
Crime Stoppers, similar to POLSEC, uses tips taken from the citizens of various communities and then passes them on to law enforcement and where they are then investigated. One difference between POLSEC and Crime Stoppers is that there is a reward if an arrest and conviction arises out of that information to said person. Crime Stoppers is a non-profit community programme designed to combat the heightened levels of fear resulting from the increase in certain types of crime.
Anonymity and confidentiality are provided under Crime Stoppers programme for callers who wish to be kept unknown. This does not interfere with the reward to be given if criteria are met. Allowing anonymity to be possible all callers are given code numbers when they contact Crime Stoppers. If the caller wishes to claim a reward, they merely have to nominate a branch of a particular bank and the caller goes to that bank and asks for the manager and provides their code number and the amount of the reward.
There will be Hotlines (telephone numbers) set up eventually to ensure accessibility to the public. Through the Crime Stoppers programme the general community becomes the eyes and ears of the police force and this has resulted in a number of wanted persons being apprehended, including murderers, rapists and criminals, in other countries.
This is an alliance amongst the community, the media, and the police to allow the public to help in the fight against crime.
