SEVENTEEN teams have so far raised their hands for the Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF) Club Championships in Jamaica from November 26 to December 4 at the Mona Astroturf.
Circus Circle and Raiders United will be joined by six overseas-based team led by Jockey Club Córdoba and GEBA of Argentina, Florianópolis HC of Brazil, Chamaleons HC of Bermuda, and Guyana HB.
St Andrew and Tropics Hockey Clubs will participate in the women’s competition, which will boast three clubs from Argentina, GEBA, Popeye BC, and Tucumán.
Club de Hockey Jalisco of Mexico, Hóquei Clube Desterro of Brasil, Shandy Carib Magnolias HC of Trinidad, and Guyana GB complete the women’s line-up.
For a competition that was cancelled in 2008, 2007, 2004, and 2003, president of the Jamaica Hockey Federation (JHF) Victor Tomlinson is beaming with delight. “Interest is highest for the last six or so years, it’s oversubscribed,” he said.
Tomlinson noted that the championships would “expose more hockey players/local umpires and tech officers to internationally flavoured competition”.
It would also “raise the awareness and profile of the sport locally to drive sponsorship and player participation, position Jamaica as a good country for hosting given the positive attributes we have, strenghten our organising capacity, (and) improve camaraderie among PAHF countries,” Tomlinson stressed.
The JHF is estimating a cost of $6 million to stage the championships.
Apart from the president, Ryan White, David Mais, Marie Powell, Audrey Gaynor, Andrea Stephenson, Denise Wisdom, Rod LueShing, and Valerie Hall are the high-profile members of the organising committee.
Tomlinson believes that Jamaican should support the championships as “hockey is a great sport to be involved in, it’s family-oriented… appeals to seniors and juniors” and is a “more challenging sport as it requires discipline and greater skill sets than many other sports, attributes to we need to foster in the country”.
The final number of participants for the championships will not be known until the first week in October, said president Tomlinson, as more male clubs from Trinidad and New York have indicated interest.
Jamaica last participated in the PAHF Club Championships in 2001 in Bridgetown, Barbados, with Raiders finishing sixth of the eight-team men’s competition; and St Andrew Hockey Club fifth in the six-team women’s competition.
Clubs from Argentina usually top the championships.
