The police up to press time were trying to ascertain the identity of a man who shot another male in broad daylight yesterday, critically wounding him.
Injured is Richard Daniels of 32 Sussex Street.
According to reports, Daniels was shot shortly after 10:00hrs yesterday. Hospital officials told Kaieteur News that the man was shot in his lower abdomen and was receiving oxygen and intravenous drips. Doctors were closely monitoring his condition, up to press time.
One neighbour told Kaieteur News that she heard the gunshot but was convinced by another relative that it was a firecracker.
“I was lying down and I hear the gunshot and someone tell me is nah no gunshot” the woman explained.
The woman recounted that seconds later another relative ran inside shouting that Daniels had been shot. Daniels, according to neigbhours, is “an involuntary remigrant”.
The woman said she exited her home to investigate but did not go too close to the scene. Another female neighbour, who claims she practically saw everything, told Kaieteur News that Daniels and his assailant were arguing downstairs in the yard.
According to the woman she was about to go to a nearby grocery shop when she observed the two men. She said she didn’t want to pay too much attention to them and continued going about her business.
The ‘eyewitness’ told Kaieteur News that she observed about two other persons in the yard with Daniels and his assailant.
The woman said that about five minutes later, she was about one house away from where the incident happened when she heard, Daniels shouting “Shoot meh nuh…..shoot meh nuh”.
The woman recounted that a single gunshot rang out and she saw a man running from the yard. Kaieteur News was told that two of Daniels’ friends were in hot pursuit of the shooter. It was unclear if there was a vehicle waiting for the assailant. The two friends who were running behind the shooter subsequently returned to the scene and had a difficult in trying to get someone to take the wounded man to the hospital.
Kaieteur News understands that the two friends eventually pulled the man’s body onto the road in an effort to get him to the hospital.
They eventually got someone to transport the wounded man. At the hospital a woman who identified herself as the man’s “child mother” told Kaieteur News that she received a telephone call sometime around 10:00hrs.
“I get the call and somebody say that he get shoot and he dead…so I come down here” the woman said. She refused to divulge any further investigation and pointed reporters to the police or Daniels’ relatives.
Investigations are continuing.
