As the new school year gets underway, 10 children in the North West District are recipients of welcomed resources for the academic year. They were the beneficiaries from community outreach efforts by two Seventh-day Adventist churches in the district.
Port Kaituma Adventist Church issued $10,000 each to five children within the community. The monies were donated for the purchase of school resources. Another church in Mabaruma distributed school supplies to five of its children. The donation included uniforms, footwear, and school bags. The total contributions of the two churches were $110,000.00.
When the Mabaruma Church handed over the items at the regional office of Education Department, Schools Welfare Officer, Leah Robinson, was present. She expressed her appreciation to the pastor and members of the churches for the timely and thoughtful contribution.
Commenting on the gesture, Pastor Andre Williams who manages the Adventist churches in the North West District, said that the church believes in practising what it preaches and teaches. The pastor also used the opportunity to emphasise that every child that is of school age should be given the opportunity to receive quality education.
Community outreach is an on-going aspect of the church’s work, and it has been a norm for churches in the North West District to give to the community.
Over the years many food items, clothing, and monies have been distributed, and medical assistance given. This has been the first time, however, that the churches have taken the initiative to make substantial contributions to school children in this manner.
