Two Kuwaiti firms have expressed an interest in conducting feasibility and design consultancy services” for the four-lane roadway extension of the East Coast of Demerara.
The proposals were opened on Tuesday by the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board.
The planned extension will see the continuation of the current four-lane carriageway from Sparendaam/Better Hope to Golden Grove. This will be around nine miles of road works.
Last year, a Kuwaiti delegation had promised Guyana to help fund the four-lane extension from Sparendaam to Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara. Currently the four lane runs from the “Russian” embassy, Subryanville, turn to Sparendaam.
Government had earmarked $500M for initial embankment works.
The first proposal opened Tuesday was from Abuljebain Consultants Offices of Kuwait.
The second was from DIWI Germany GMDH Consultants Engineers in association with Marcel Gaskin and Associates (Guyana) and SIEF Engineering Consultants of Kuwait.
In July last year, Kuwait Prime Minister, Sheikh Nasser Mohammed Al Ahmed Al-Jaber Al Sabah, has signaled interest in financing the cost of the four-lane extension.
President Bharrat Jagdeo after a meeting with the Kuwaiti officials said that the extension is “pertinent” since the traffic is heaviest on that corridor.
Guyana and Kuwait established diplomatic relations on August 17, 1995.
Congestion along the country’s road artery has become a pressing problem with Government estimating around 10,000 vehicles being added on the road yearly.
