– N/A students send cards to children in Egypt
Students in New Amsterdam have messages of peace in the form of greeting cards that will be sent to children in Egypt (where there has been much publicised civil unrest) in commemoration of International Peace Day 2011.
International Peace Day is celebrated on September 21, annually, and is recognized by the United Nations.
Various primary school students from New Amsterdam and All Saints’ Primary schools prepared cards with peace messages recently for children in Egypt.
According to International Service Director of Rotaract Club of New Amsterdam, Lauristian Choy, the club shared contact information with the Rotaract Club of Cairo, Egypt, and developed a working relationship. This led to an invitation by Cairo to do a peace project to give hope and support to the people of Egypt, who at present are facing tremendous political instability.
The International Service has as its motto to foster better international relations with fellow Rotaract clubs in and out of the Rotaract District 7030.
“Seeing that September 21 is known as International Peace Day by the UN, both clubs decided to let this peace project be the launching pad to sending a strong message through the future of our country, the children, that we need to promote and sustain peace in and out of our country. Students are the seeds of tomorrow. Involving them in activities related to peace, helps in building societies with no violence and crime,” Choy said.
The students were involved individually, creating handmade greeting cards with the theme “Peace”. The greeting cards will carry messages or a quotation that represents the meaning of peace and their vision of what peace is, in their own language and in their own handwriting, and below an English translation to make it easy for the people from another country to understand.
The cards have since been sent to Egypt.
The Rotaract Club also held a massive clean-up of the town of New Amsterdam and distributed flyers and garbage bags to persons in the community to promote a litter-free town, to coincide with the Grand Town Day which will be held next weekend.
