At least eight persons are now homeless after fire gutted their Meadowbrook Gardens home yesterday afternoon.
According to reports, the blaze started in the upper flat of the two-storey house at Lot 135 Silverballi Street, at around 13:20 hours. At the time, a woman and her four-year-old son were in the house. This publication was told that the woman was in the lower flat of the house while her son was in the upper flat, unattended.
The child reportedly ran downstairs to his mother saying that there was a fire in a bedroom, located in the upper flat. Persons in the area told this publication that the woman then raised an alarm, which was when nearby residents became aware of what was going on.
A male eyewitness, who asked not to be identified, said he immediately ran to the house and grabbed the woman’s son and took him to a neighbour’s residence. The man said he then made several attempts to extinguish the fire with buckets of water but that was no match for the inferno. In the meantime the Fire Service responded promptly.
However, most of the upper flat of the building was destroyed.
The owner of the property, Rochelle Abrams-Burnette, who does not reside there, said she was at her mother’s home in Roxanne Burnham Gardens when she received a call from her son indicating that the house was on fire. She said most of her belongings were stored in one of the rooms of the burnt out building.
“I’m the one who is losing here. All my stuff I put in this house only the other day, I had a wardrobe filled with clothes for my children, water pump, everything household thing you can think about I had in there.”
One of the occupants of the house, Gerald Prowell, who is Mrs. Adams-Burnette’s brother-in-law, said he was not at home when the fire started and as such could not say what started the fire. He however speculated that it was unlikely to have been electrical in origin. Prowell said he lives at the house with his reputed wife and her son. He said a total of eight persons occupy the residence.
Meanwhile, fire service officials are carrying out investigations. Up to late yesterday afternoon statements were being taken from the woman who was at home at the time as well as from eyewitnesses.
