Dear Editor,
I write as one of the more than seven hundred thousand owners of the Guyana National Stadium located at Providence, East Bank Demerara. I have no difficulty with State properties being used for National events. I do, however, have a grave difficulty with
blatant unapologetic abuse of State resources for partisan political purposes, especially immediately before National elections.
The unfair disadvantage presented to other competing parties in the upcoming elections is an issue that each of those competing parties must address. I speak here for myself.
My difficulty has to do with:
The failure or refusal of the managers of the State of Guyana to account to us, the citizens of this country, for the expenditure with respect to the construction of this nationally owned asset.
The failure or refusal of the said managers to settle all accounts with contractors who worked on the construction of the stadium and its site preparation. I am informed that one such contractor is still owed in excess of fifty million dollars.
In the circumstances, the much touted “day of appreciation” at the stadium for Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo who demits the Office of President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana shortly is in bad taste. To me, it is like cooking tainted meat in a dirty pot and then eating proudly out of that pot while preaching the virtues of healthy eating.
It is indeed interesting that one of the organisers goes by the title of ‘bishop’. This gentleman professes to be working on behalf of the Christian community and the Inter-religious organisation. He cannot speak for me.
May I reacquaint him with Matthew Chapter 23, verses 25 thru 26 where Jesus speaks thus:
“Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisees, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.”
