Uitvlugt Komal and Mangal All stars defeated Mc Gill Super Stars by 5 wickets to capture the West Demerara Cricket Association / Countryside Agri Center twenty/20 title when they contested the final at Wales Community Center Ground on Saturday.
In a match which was reduced to 12 overs due to early morning showers Mc Gill Supper Star were inserted to bat first on a track with lots of preparation moisture and in front of a small but vocal crowd. They never looked comfortable against the pace / spin combination of Uitvlugt and lost wickets at regular intervals despite a top score of 16 from Jagdesh Balgobin and 13 from Mahadeo Ramotar as they ended on 64-6, Chandreka Ragnauth picked up 2-9 off 3 overs, while Wayne Osborne and Imran Khan had 1 each.
Uitvlugt started off their reply in fine fashion with Osborne and Tulsieram Ramadeen putting together 19 runs for the first wicket. Osborne, who pulled the first ball he received through square leg for four and followed that up with another boundry through point in the next over, was the first to go when he was caught at midwicket off Abdool Razack. Ramadeen soon followed when he lofted Balram Aaron to long off at 24 in the 7th over. The All stars then lost Navishaul Pooran (07) who batted with a runner after he sustained an injury, Roopnarine Persaud 16 (1×6, 1×4) and Seon Venture 2 before Imran Khan (9n.o) and Parmesh Persaud (00) saw them to victory off 11.3 overs as they ended on 65-5. Jagdesh Balgobin took 2-10 off 2 overs, while there was one each for Abdool Razack, Aeron and Rameshwar Persaud. Uitvlugt received the winning trophy and $100,000 while Mc Gill collected the runner up hardware and $50,000. The best batsman in the final award went to Roopnarine Persaud while Chandreka Ragnauth received the trophy for the best bowler.
Jagdesh Balgobin won the man of the match prize.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, representative of the sponsor Lalta Degamber congratulated the winners and said that he is pleased to be associated with cricket in West Demerara. He stated that an U-15 and U-19 competition will start shortly. Degamber is also a member of the competition committee of the area board.
President of the West Demerara Cricket Association Anand Sanasie thanked the sponsor and urged the players to take the game seriously.
