President’s X1 second behind Demerara
Three of the fours teams can still qualify for Sunday’s Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) El Dorado 50-over final at Albion after today’s final round of matches in the city.
Demerara, with victories against Essequibo and defending champions Berbice are the only unbeaten team and head the field with eight points while the President’s X1, despite their first round loss to Berbice at Blairmont, are second on seven points with Berbcie on four and Essequibo yet to come off the mark.
Today Demerara face the President’s X1 at Bourda, while Berbice take on Essequibo at DCC.
The President’s X1, who gained three extra points from their comprehensive win against Essequibo in their last match, are capable of upsetting Demerara today if players like Skipper Travis Dowlin, Sewnarine Chattergoon and Steven Jacobs get going.
A close victory for the President’s today could see Berbice getting edged out of the Final even if they beat Essequibo, but the Essequibians lost by a narrow margin, so there is all to play for in today’s final round.
A win earns a team four points, two points are allocated for a Tie or No-Result while no point is awarded for a loss.
In the event of teams finishing on equal points, the right to progress to the final will be determined as follows: The team with the highest net run rate, if still equal the team with the most wins, If still equal, the team with the highest number of bonus points. A team which dismisses the opposition for less than 150 runs (and wins the match) will be awarded 2 Super Bonus Points. The President’s X1 collected two Super Bonus point after dismissing Essequibo for 118 and another bonus point for successfully chasing down the target while losing just one wicket.
The President’s X1 is the only team with bonus points and both matches are scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs today. (Sean Devers)
