Host Fruta Conquerors will have to make significant improvement very quickly if they are to get further than the semi-finals after a lacklustre display against minnows Northern Rangers whom they defeated via the slimmest of margins when the two teams faced each other in the feature quarter-final matchup on Sunday evening at the Tucville ground.
Playing in the Milo-Under-23 Football Tournament, Fruta Conquerors, a team touted to win the competition produced a disappointing performance and were lucky to escape with a 1-0 triumph thanks to a solitary strike off the boots of Eon Alleyne, who netted in the 18th minute of play.
In the curtain raiser, Santos looked more convincing in their 3-1 win over GFC and should now be considered strong contenders to capture the title and first prize.
They were led to victory through strikes from Colin Harris (15th), Shane Moseley (70th) and William Europe (80th), while Cardel Tudor’s (30th) minute effort had levelled the game in the opening period.
In the feature encounter, Conquerors looked the more purposeful early, but poor finishing kept the contest scoreless.
Pernell Schultz, Junor and Alleyne were guilty of squandering opportunities to score, while Rangers also had a few chances of their own to cause some anxious moments for the home fans.
However, the Rangers goalkeeper, who was found off his line very often, but was lucky to escape due to some errant shooting took one chance too many and paid the ultimate price as a curling cross from the right flank evaded his outstretched hands as he tried in vain to parry out of the goal area and landed at the feet of a sweeping Alleyne, who clinically finished with the side of his foot. The half came with the score-line unchanged.
After the resumption, Conquerors picked up where they had left off with Junor and Schultz missing from close range, while Rangers followed suit wasting clear chances to level the scores.
Despite the lifting of the tempo with most of the play concentrated in the Conquerors half, they managed to defend stoutly, repelling repeated forays from the Rangers, before the final whistle sounded much to their reprieve. The competition continues tomorrow with another double header at the same venue. In the curtain raiser, Flamingo tackles Beacons from 18:00hrs and the GDF and Police collide from 20:00 hrs.Over $1million in prizes is up for grabs with the winning team set to receive $100,000, runner-up-$50,000, 3rd place-$30,000 and 4th place-$20,000.
