It was knockouts galore as eight of the nine bouts ended inside the distance when the curtains went up on the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Junior, and Intermediate Boxing championships at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, Friday evening.
Amidst it all Warren George employed a two fisted attack that put away his man in just 8secs of their welterweight bout. Sporting a well defined physique, George rushed out at the sound of the bell and dealt Holder several roundhouse punches and the soldier sought refuge behind highly held guards. This did not deter George who banged away and after a particularly vicious assault, the referee instituted the mandatory count and
subsequently waved the bout off after Holder, despite the pleadings of his handlers, indicated that he had had enough.
Joel Williamson (PRBG) returned to his winning ways when he employed a boxer/fighter strategy to outlast Akeem Sutherland by a 3-0 decision in their 95-99lbs clash. Williamson, who lost out to Imran Khan in last month’s edition of the Friday Night Fights showed that he has what it takes to mingle among the big boys. Several ramrod offerings connected to Sutherland’s head and despite his gameness he just could not come to grips with the lightening quick punches of his nemesis.
In the other bout that went the distance, Elijah Insanally earned a 3-0 decision over Kevin Mulling in their 65-69lbs shindig.
The former boxer was just too slick for the latter and piled up the punches which earned him the eventual 3-0 verdict.
Other results were: 65-69lbs Rayon Ramroop (HE) lost after the referee stopped his bout against his gym mate, Kurt Allicock in 45secs of the first stanza; Tyrone Lashley (Rose Hall Jammers) forced the referee to stop his 80-84lbs bout against Akeem April (Tiger Eye) in 1:27secs of the second round, while Romel Rowley (RW)prevailed after stopping David Bennett of Central New Amsterdam (CNA) in 29secs of the first round in their 90-94lbs clash.
Jamal Archer (HE) also registered a 59secs stoppage over Erwin Victor (Tiger Eye) in a 110-117lbs clash moments before Quincy Boyce (Five Star) stopped Noel Dunn in 1:13secs of the first frame.
The action continued last night with nine semifinal fights while eleven champions would be crowned when the action culminates tonight.
