DEAR EDITOR,
I am responding to a letter published on September 9, titled “Ignoring the seriously injured at Skeldon Hospital”, which describes an incident of a patient not being properly attended to.
I am the doctor that was mentioned in your posting. There must have been some type of misrepresentation of information. I am not commenting about the validity of the incident; however, what I am commenting on is the false use of my name.
This is directed at the “Concerned Guyanese-American”. I am not sure which doctor you spoke to, however it was not me. I am a small built, young female, weigh 108 pounds, have short black hair, and am 5’1″ in height. I am sure that whomever you spoke to that day/night does not match my description. Furthermore, I reside in Port Mourant, 30 miles away from Skeldon.
The reason I am mentioning this is because there is no way that anyone from Skeldon could possibly be aware of my whereabouts the evening before, seeing that I don’t even remotely reside in that area.
It would have helped if you had mentioned the date of when this incident took place so that Skeldon hospital could validate your story, because the hospital has no record of this incident.
My primary medical facility where I provide care is Port Mourant Hospital. My name is only affiliated with Skeldon hospital because I was temporarily assigned there for about two weeks.
I only worked there for a few nights and I can assure you that at no time, was any such case as you have described, been under my care and supervision during my temporary stay there. In addition to that, money does not have an effect on the type of treatment and the time in which it takes for patients to be attended to.
It’s easy for a visitor or someone that calls themself a “Concerned Guyanese-American”, who visits Guyana once a year, to insult our Health Care Service.
I challenge you to visit one of our medical facilities for a few hours and observe how many lives we positively affect and how many lives are saved. It would have been a great service to your mother country if you were to recognize our great work and positive progression towards the future.
Instead, you took your valuable time and efforts to criticize us and then call yourself a concerned Guyanese.
I think that before you mentioned my name in the newspaper, you should have at least had the nerve to get it from a good source or verify that you were correct.
I am not afraid to tell you who I am because I am proud of my name and title I have earned. Additionally, I think that it was very wrong of you to use my name because someone mentioned it, if that’s even true; and even more so, very cowardly of you to not state your name!
I would like to congratulate you on trying to be a hero; however, it would have been warranted if your letter was filled with facts rather than being saturated with fiction and hearsay. I think that it is a shame that I have to defend not only my character but my name in a public forum.
Dr. Balkarran
