Gail Quan, of 32 Smyth and D’Urban, Charlestown, was brought before Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry charged with the offense of fraudulently converting a Toyota 212 valued at $1.6M to her own use and benefit.
She was remanded.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey stated that between March and July 20, last, the accused sold the Toyota vehicle which was left in the possession of her husband. The Prosecution continued that vehicle number PKK 7491 was left to the husband by the owner who was regularly out of the country.
According to Mr. Harvey, the woman’s husband was given permission to operate the vehicle provided that he pays the owner $20,000 per month. The vehicle, Mr. Harvey told the court, had got into an accident and was subsequently taken to a repair shop.
Mr. Harvey also told the court that after the incident the owner of the car lost contact with the individuals claiming they may have changed their number.
The victim of the felony on a visit to the last residence of the accused revealed that they no longer occupied the location.
Through the man’s own investigation, Mr. Harvey continued, he learnt that the accused had left the country and that the car was at a workshop.
When he and officers went to the mechanic shop they learnt that the vehicle had been sold.
Quan returned to Guyana and was apprehended by the police. Mr. Harvey then made known to the court that Quan in a caution statement had told the police she had sold the vehicle.
In Quan’s defence, lawyer Kevon Bess, told the court that the woman had given her husband some money to purchase a vehicle and was unaware of the terms of the agreement between her husband who may have committed the act and the owner of the vehicle.
The lawyer also made a bail application for his client stating it would be unfair for the woman to not be granted bail since the husband had not been apprehended.
The prosecution refuted the bail application stating that the woman had contacted the owner of the car guaranteeing him of the repairs be done to the vehicle.
The court denied the bail application and transferred the matter to court 6.
