After losing their homes and most of their belongings in the August 17, last fire that struck Broad and Lombard Streets, some residents are rebuilding.
However, the Mayor and City Council finds this unacceptable and has once again issued notices informing the occupants to discontinue erecting structures and to remove from the environment.
According to Royston King, Public Relations Officer, the construction of some shacks in the burnt out area has attracted the attention of the Engineers’ Department and the relevant officers are in the process of addressing the matter.
King added that the Council is encouraging citizens to desist from building shacks or erecting any structure that is not in keeping with the building regulation of Georgetown.
In addition, such works hold a serious risk to residents because the durability of those structures cannot be vouched for. Further, the sanitary condition of that area is a public health concern.
King stressed that all citizens and contractors who want to expedite construction works in the City have to seek permission from the Council. He added that under the Municipal and District Council Act Chapter 28:01, the engineer has the authority to dismantle and remove all structures that were erected illegally.
According to a resident, Tyana Daniels, her family has been living in that environment for about 20 years and described the life there as the ‘ghetto living’. She emphasized that it is not her family’s desire to live there but they have nowhere else to go. Daniels shares a shack with her sister and niece.
It was related that after the fire she and some other residents applied for house lots. However, being skeptical that it may take years for the application to process and a house lot to be allocated they returned to the ‘ghetto’ and rebuild their shack.
Daniels emphasized that it is easier to live there since they do not have to pay rent but if her family is awarded a plot of land they will be willing to move.
However, it seems as if Daniels and the other occupants on the plot may have to move whether they have received a plot of land.
