Sports Education vital to development – Dr. Anthony
The Guyana Football Federation in association with the world governing body for football FIFA yesterday concluded a successful one-week MA Elite Coaches Course at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue.
The programme which was conducted by FIFA accredited Instructor Alvin Corneal of Trinidad and Tobago attracted 21 participants including 3 females drawn from the GFF member associations including Lethem, Bartica, Essequibo, West Demerara, East Bank, Upper Demerara, Berbice, East Demerara and Georgetown.
Among the areas Mr. Corneal dealt with were the Theory of coaching methods; practical, physical preparation for teams in realistic activity; the theory and practice of defensive play; defending in a game situation; attacking and defending at set plays, corners and throw ins; playing in the final third of the field; systems of play – which was a power point presentation; process of team selection and communication with players on the bench during a game and practical sessions relating to retaining shape (defensively) and value of mobility in attack.
These were just a few of the sessions that were done by Corneal which saw full participation from the attendees.
Theoretical examinations were done on the topics covered during the course and this took the form of overnight responses in writing by the individual coaches.
Apart from complimenting the participants for their inputs during the course where they were punctual and asked questions consistently, Mr. Corneal told them that he would be back next year to see the level of progress they would have attained in terms of their practical work with their respective clubs.
He reminded them that it was important for them to seek to be very proactive and ensure that the knowledge gained is imparted in a positive way to the players so that real development can take place redounding to the level of Guyana’s game being impacted upon positively.
Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony in his feature remarks told the gathering that Sports Education is vital to development. He complimented FIFA, GFF and Mr. Corneal for the high level of investment that has been taking place in football over the past years.
“If you want to bring respectability to what you are doing then we need to get people properly qualified just like with any profession.
With coaching you have a very important role to play and sometimes people brush this aside because they feel that if you play the game you can go out on the field and automatically become good coaches and that is not necessarily true.
You might have a few exceptions but you have to learn how to coach.”
Minister Anthony urged the coaches to put their knowledge to good use and to ensure that they seek to do community work.
“I want to urge you that the knowledge you would have gained here must be shared in your respective communities. We want to see that you are attached to clubs and schools.”
Dr. Anthony noted that he would like to see a very elaborate schools programme informing that Guyana has adopted the Canadian format into the general sports policy and plan which would be incorporated across the board.
“That’s sports policy is completed and its now at the printing stage and that would be made available so that it can guide associations. I think if we follow that you would see that one of the pillars for sports development is community development and sports in schools.”
Also present at yesterday’s closing ceremony were GFF President (ag) Franklin Wilson and Certificates were presented to the participants of the course which was coordinated by GFF Super League Administrator, Kirk Douglas.
