A fire believed to have been started by a kerosene stove, shortly after 6:00 hours yesterday, has caused an Enmore,
East Coast Demerara woman and two small children to lose all of their worldly possessions.
Left homeless is Doris Balkissoon, who is “differently able” and two young children escaped unhurt.
Bobby Singh, a relative of the woman, explained that the woman was born with a medical condition which hinders her speech. He said that the woman is fully aware of her surroundings, but just cannot speak.
According to Singh the woman was cooking, when the kerosene stove “flared up”. Singh said that the woman panicked and ran out of the home with the two children.
The man further told Kaieteur News that the Enmore fire service was summoned, but could do nothing to contain the blaze.
Relatives and neighbours stood in disbelief as they watched the house go up in flames. Eventually a fire tender from, Georgetown arrived but by the time they came the house was already destroyed.
The woman has since moved in with a brother, Nauth Balkissoon, a pensioner who lives further in the village. He said that a few years ago he lamented the absence of fire hydrants in the community.
He said that GWI removed them when the company modified the pipelines.
He sustained burns to his face. He had run from his home to the place his sister called home. The building was left to them by their mother who died last March.
He said that when the blaze started his sister panicked but even then the building could have been saved if people had formed a bucket brigade. Instead, they merely stood and watch the building burn.
Villagers yesterday raised the issue that whenever a fire happens in Enmore, there is little the fire tender in the community could do.
According to them there is the need for a bigger and better fire station which can better serve the people if and when a fire strikes.
