Dem, E’bo match to be replayed today
On a day when Guyana’s premier cricket venue and the fastest drying cricket ground in the West Indies was unavailable because of an activity involving President Bharrat Jagdeo, the opening round match between Demerara and Essequibo in the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) El Dorado senior 50-over competition was washed out without a ball being bowled at Bourda yesterday due to a damp outfield.
While the playing conditions of the competition does not cater for a reserve day, the GCB have stated that in the interest of cricket and allowing the selectors to see the players before picking the National squad for next month’s Regional One-Day tournament in Guyana, the match will be replayed today at Bourda.
In the other game at Blairmont in West Berbice, defending champions Berbice beat the President’s X1 by seven wickets after reaching 172-3 from 38.2 overs after dismissing the visitors for 168 in 49.2 overs.
After Skipper Travis Dowlin was bowled by former National youth off-spinner Steven Latcha for no score, Steven Jacobs top scored with 45 and got support from Sewnarine Chattergoon (35) but only Deon Ferrier (18) and national youth player Chanderpaul Hemraj (14) of the other batsmen got into double figures for the President’s X1 team on a slow track with generous assistance for the spinners.
Using the new WICB Regional regulations which states two bowlers can bowl 12 overs in a 50-over game, Latcha finished with 3-20 from 12, while left-arm spinner Eugene La Fleur took 3-27 from 10 and Skipper Royston Crandon 2-39 from 9.2. First-Class pacer Keon Joseph who took 1-39 from 11 overs was the other bowler to bowl more than 10 overs.
In reply, Berbice lost Richard Ramdeen (4), Assad Fudadin (17) and Narsingh Deonarine (23) before Crandon (61*) and Jonathon Foo (51*) put together 110 in an unfinished fourth wicket stand to set up victory for their team after Deonarine departed at 62-3.
The second round is set for tomorrow when the President’s X1 face-off with Essequibo at DCC and Demerara battle Berbice at Everest.
