Local Distributors, Ansa McAl Trading Limited will bounce off its Mackeson Smooth Moves 3-on-3 basketball tournament on October 2 at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court in Linden. It will mark a welcome return for basketball in the community.
The inaugural tournament was launched yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and will be played across the country. It is being planned as a mega event as it represented the first 3-on-3 to be played at such a macro level in Guyana.
Ansa McAl’s Marketing Director, Troy Cadogan, indicated that it is a great day for basketball in Guyana. He said the 3-on-3 format of the game will bring renewed excitement to basketball fans and players alike, which was one of the objectives of the event.
Cadogan likened the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) endorsed 3-on-3 tournament to cricket’s Twenty/20 and football’s Futsal. He stated these shorter and action-packed formats are necessary to maintain the excitement and support from patrons.
He informed that the Championships will be lucrative as the winning team will win a trip to the 2012 National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star Weekend in Orlando, Florida or a trade-in value worth some one million dollars.
The second and third place teams will receive $300,000 and $200,000 respectively. Ansa McAl hopes to attract in excess of 500 teams from the four zones that include Linden, Georgetown, Berbice and East Coast, with each zone winner earning a cash prize.
President of Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF), David Patterson, lauded the Ansa McAl Group of Companies for sponsoring the Championships. He said that the 3-on-3 format is a refreshing step toward resuscitating the sport in Guyana.
Patterson further noted that the Championships would be beneficial in spotting new talent from around country. The GABF President congratulated Ansa McAl for having the idea and wished the inaugural championships a tremendous success.
The sudden-death or win-or-go home format will be used and each team will have three players per team with one substitute, four fouls per player and five fouls per team. The 15-minute game will feature two seven and a half minutes halves with no timeouts. However, there will be a one minute break at halftime. The players must be 18 years or older and be residents of Guyana. Players will register using entry forms that will be found in newspapers, posters and flyers.
Admission to see the games is free and games played on Wednesdays and Saturdays will bounce off at 6pm and 3pm respectively, while games played on Sundays will begin at 11 am.
The entrance mechanisms must be submitted in the entry boxes available at all participating bars and supermarkets. To register on game days, each team must provide six Mackeson crowns to play. Games will be played on the Burnham Basketball court, Mackenzie Hard Court and other courts in Berbice, Albouystown, Sophia, Buxton etc. The venue for the finals will be released on a later date.
