The Vice Mayor of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) Chen Qi, from the City of Fuzhou, Fujian Province, and a delegation paid a one-day visit to Guyana yesterday.
The Vice Mayor made his first stop at City Hall where he met Deputy Mayor Robert Williams. It was expressed that the visit is expected to enhance the municipality’s relations with China and possibly provide benefits in terms of technical and monetary assistance for several projects, including the rehabilitation of City Hall.

Williams opined that the Council, and by extension the country, will benefit from the renewed relationship, as the Fujian Province is part of an emerging first world country.
In addition to bilateral discussions, the visiting team along with Council members engaged in a tree-planting exercise at the Promenade Garden. The Chinese delegation also paid a courtesy call on Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Norman Whittaker.
Vice Mayor Qi spoke in depth of his country’s industrialisation in the field of automobiles, textiles, electronics and construction, while Deputy Mayor Williams stressed that the visit was timely and spoke of its potential for the capital city as well as the country. He also noted that Guyana is aware of China’s impressive trends in relation to developing nations.
